What to see and when to go
The essential classics are Registan Square and Gur-e-Amir in Samarkand, the Poi-Kalyan ensemble and the Ark fortress in Bukhara, and the inner city of Ichan-Kala in Khiva. The best time to travel is spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when the mild weather is perfect for walking and photography and the bazaars are full of fruit.
